After the publication of Wonderflies 2 in 2010, Patrick Daniels and I started sampling and photographing the insects found on trout waters. Patrick took beautiful macro photos of these insects while I did the determination. This way we collected a large number of pictures. You will find them in this book, together with the imitations, and when, where and how to use them.
I also discovered a new river, half an hour's drive from my home: the Vesdre. At first I was not very impressed with this river: polluted, flowing partly through urbanized areas, or between dilapidated industrial areas, smelly in the places where untreated sewage flowed into it. Spots in the middle of Verviers where you imagined yourself in Africa. Traffic noise in the background .
Not exactly the romantic environment most fly fishermen dream of. But also stretches that flowed through meadows, full of ranunculus beds and above all: Lots of fish. Sometimes very big ones. After fishing there for several years we said to each other: We don't need to go to Patagonia at all. With catches of 50-plus on sometimes tiny flies. Even fish of more than 60 cm that took a Grey flag on an evening jump. Some of those experiences are in this book.
I welcome the contributions of friends: Douglas Barnes, Léon Cauberg, Patrick Daniels, Christian Guimonnet and Goran Hot, all very experienced fly fishermen.
